I’ve been chompin’ at the bit to try the Nike One balls and finally bit the bullet and plinked down the $40 for a box. I used them on the Los Lagos course at the Costa Mesa Country Club today. My normal ball is the Callaway Warbird, so that is my “baseline.” For the first go-round, I chose the “Black” because they are engineered for greater distance and minimized ball spin off the tee. My logic was to gain more distance and maybe reduce the slice. I also chose Los Lagos, because I know the baseline distances that I hit so I can compare without hitting two or three balls on every hole.
Let’s see… The ratings on the box are Driver Distance (10), Driver Spin (5), Feel (8), and Short Iron Spin (8). The main difference between the Black and Platinum models are the distance on the driver and spin off the driver. The Platinum are rated for greater spin and less distance. I don’t completely understand the concept of “feel” so I won’t comment.
Distance… I fond the distance comparable to what I get with the Warbirds. It may have been marginally longer, but not significantly, with the exception of the par 3 seventh hole. I normally hit a three or four iron on this hole, depending on my mood, and it seems like there’s a ball-magnet in the water. I clubbed down to a five iron this time and hit a beautiful fade to within a couple feet of the green. I also had better than average distance on the second, and number six, where distance and placement are key to making it around the dog leg within a reasonable number of strokes.
Driver Spin… I hit the dball well and did seem to have less fade than normal, and had three slices that weren’t exactly the fault of the balls.
Iron Spin… I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary with the exception of my approach sshot on the four par ninthe hols. I hit a seven iron out of the medium rough onto the green with my standard fade and the ball stopped within ten feet after a 150 yard shot. While not spectacular, it isn’t characteristic of my game.
Preliminary verdict: I could almost buy three boxes of Warbirds for the price of the Nike One’s and I didn’t see enough of the value on the course. I will continue to use the Blacks for the next couple weeks and will continue to evaluate and post. I am also planning a three-ball side by side comparison hit on the same holes during the same round - probably within two weeks. Think I’ll do the Nike, Warbird and Top Flite D2’s. We’ll see - that could change. It all depends upon what new balls I have in my bag at the time.
